Increasing suffering: New youth campaign clarifies about blemishes and acne
High dismay and great suffering: Young people fight with blemishes
A current AOK survey shows that blemishes are a great burden for young people, especially for young people. According to the survey, 96 percent of citizens in Germany between the ages of 14 and 29 have already been affected by blemishes at least once. A third of them have even had experience with strong impurities. In addition, every fifth adolescent and young adults suffered from acne. The results of the survey make it clear that a bad complexion leads to a high level of suffering among many of those affected.
dr. Carola Reimann, CEO of the AOK federal association, emphasizes that blemishes and acne are rather unsightly chapters of growing up, especially on the face or on other visible body regions. In most cases, these are only cosmetic problems that disappear on their own. But when pimples and blackheads become serious and permanent companions, this can heavily burden the psyche. The survey confirms that over half of the boys, who are severely affected, suffers from a reduced self -esteem. In addition, about half of those affected have already been ashamed of their blemishes and 61 percent feared difficulties when looking for a partner.
For people who are severely affected by blemishes and suffer, Reimann recommends visiting a doctor's office. A doctor can ensure a significant relief of the acne with the right therapy, which can also have a positive effect on mental health. However, only 49 percent of those affected have used this medical offer.
The results of the Forsa survey show a great need for advice and information. Already 37 percent of those affected between the ages of 14 and 29 have already researched the causes and treatment options of acne. Half of this is looking for advice and support on the Internet, whereby social media being used by every fifth person. As part of your new youth campaign, "just your skin disease in your head?" If the AOK would like to close knowledge gaps via its own online platforms and clear out treatment myths around the topic of skin. The health insurance website offers information about the various forms of acne and differences to other skin diseases. Nevertheless, so far only 27 percent of young people affected have felt well informed about the skin disease acne. With 32 percent, the multitude of information even has a negative effect because they feel overwhelmed by it.
The AOK hopes that the young people will find the desired support on their platforms. Because blemishes and acne can not only affect the external appearance, but also the self -esteem and mental health of those affected. It is important that young people get the right treatment and feel well informed.
