Discover Zehlendorf: city walk with district councilor!
On September 13, 2025, district councilor Patrick Steinhoff invites you to a city walk through the center of Zehlendorf. The event starts at the Kulturkiosk (Zehlendorf Eiche) from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The aim of the walk is to discover significant local attractions and historical places. Stations are planned at the Paulus community, the Zehlendorf S-Bahn station, the Gottfried Benn library, the Schadow high school and the community forest.
The walk not only offers participants the opportunity to learn more about planned construction work and cultural initiatives, but also to discuss important topics for Zehlendorf. Participation is free, but mandatory registration is required. Anyone interested can register at the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office on 030 90299 6203 or by email at bikuspo@ba-sz.berlin.de.
Open Monument Day
As part of the city walk you will also visit the Open Monument Day which takes place on September 13th and 14th. On this special weekend, around 30 places in Steglitz-Zehlendorf will open their doors to the public. Historic architectural styles and local history are presented through guided tours and exhibitions that take visitors back in time.
The highlights of the program include the Conrad Villas in the Alsen Colony, the Heydenreich House, the Zehlendorf Local History Museum and numerous other historical sites. This variety of attractions is intended not only to raise awareness of the preservation of architectural monuments, but also to celebrate the region's cultural heritage.
Importance of the old towns
The relevance of old towns for the cityscape and local identity is often discussed in a comprehensive debate. Historic old towns contain important structures and ensembles that can function as both residential and commercial spaces. Abe's Online emphasizes that the care and preservation of these historical spaces not only improves the quality of life, but also strengthens the economic attractiveness of the region.
Urban development in historical contexts requires a balance between the preservation of traditional structures and the need to meet modern requirements. The change in the use of public spaces, together with the influence of e-commerce on shopping behavior, poses particular challenges for old towns today. The program items of the Open Monument Day help to bring these challenges into focus while at the same time preserving the valuable historical places for the future.
