Spandau sets an example for peace: Raising the flag against nuclear wars!
On July 8, 2025, around 600 cities and municipalities in Germany, including Spandau, will fly the flag of the international initiative Mayors for Peace hoist. This action serves as a visible signal against war and nuclear threats and to promote a peaceful and just world. District mayor Frank Bewig will speak at the flag-raising ceremony in front of the town hall in Spandau and emphasize the importance of this initiative.
Frank Bewig will also be accompanied on this day by Cornelia Brinkmann, the managing director of Steps for Peace, who will symbolically present origami peace cranes. Raising the flag is not only a locally focused act, but also represents a global call to action. Berlin.de highlights that the initiative was launched in 1982 by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the aim of a global abolition of nuclear weapons and the promotion of sustainable peace policies.
The aim of the initiative
Mayors for Peace is a network that now covers over 8,500 cities in 166 countries and regions. It arose from the idea that mayors have a special responsibility for the safety of their citizens. Since its founding, the organization has been dedicated to preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons and achieving their comprehensive abolition. More than 900 cities in Germany are members, which underlines the high level of participation and commitment to peace and security.
Given the current geopolitical situation, in which the risk of nuclear catastrophe is increasing, the message of Mayors for Peace is more relevant today than ever. According to an analysis by ICAN The nuclear weapon states have modern arsenals and make it clear that they do not rule out the use of nuclear weapons. These developments require clear steps towards a world free of nuclear weapons.
demands on the federal government
The initiative is accompanied by demands aimed at the future federal government, particularly with regard to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (AVV). Although this came into force in 2021 and was signed by 94 countries, Germany is not yet there. The demands include, among others:
- Unterzeichnung des Atomwaffenverbotsvertrags.
- Sofortiger Abzug der US-Atombomben aus Deutschland.
- Keine Atomwaffen in Deutschland stationieren.
Citizens are called upon to actively participate in the discussion about nuclear disarmament, contact their political representatives and find out about local actions. This also includes participation in a planned campaign on January 22, 2025 in Berlin and voting in the upcoming federal election on February 23, 2025.
The activities and events such as the raising of the flag by Mayors for Peace are not only a sign of solidarity, but also an essential part of the global movement against the nuclear threat. They remind us that peace and security require joint efforts, both locally and internationally.
