Refurbishment of the sports facilities at the Robert Havemann Gymnasium: Millions of investment!
On September 19, 2025, the construction technology accepted the renovation of the school sports facilities at the Robert Havemann-Gymnasium in Berlin. This measure includes an impressive area of around 9,100 m² and aims to offer a variety of sports opportunities. This includes a large playing field, a small playing field, a beach volleyball complex as well as a long jump and a 100 m career. The comprehensive renovation became necessary to meet the school's sporting requirements and to promote the sporting activities of the students. The financing of the project amounts to around 1,460,000 euros, which were provided through the district investment program. Berlin.de reports that…
The renovation measures include the repair and partial renewal of the support walls of the terraced sports facility, the creation of a care access to the upper level and the renewal of the large playing field with a new, sawed artificial turf. The small playing fields, the career and the long jump system were also equipped with modern plastic coverings. Furthermore, four basketball stands and the necessary fences were repaired to make the sports facilities usable again. These progress is part of a larger trend that underlines the need for investments in sports facilities.
Investment needs in Germany
A current study by the Tagesschau illuminates the alarming situation of many municipal sports facilities in Germany. According to this, numerous municipal swimming pools and sports halls urgently need to be renovated, with 59 percent of the cities, municipalities and counties surveyed reporting of a "serious" or "noteworthy" backlog. For indoor pools, this value is even 62 percent. The main problems focus on the energetic state of the buildings and the dilapidated sanitary and technical systems.
These investment deficiencies mean that 16 percent of outdoor pools, 15 percent of the ice rinks and 14 percent of indoor pools are expected to close in the coming years. It is particularly striking that 40 percent of the municipalities surveyed can no longer carry out individual sports offers due to the structural condition of their sports facilities. A rethink is necessary because sports facilities are crucial for promoting sport and especially for learning swimming skills, since the number of non-swimmers is steadily increasing.
Political reactions and solutions
The German Association of Cities and Municipalities describes the situation as "dramatic" and urgently demands financial support from the federal and state governments for new buildings and decisive renovations. These demands are underpinned by the results of a special survey as part of the "KfW Communal Panel 2025", which shows that 94 percent of the municipalities have sports halls and 92 percent of sports fields. Nevertheless, the investment deficit remains a central inhibitory shoe that makes the efforts to make a variety of and sustainable sports offer in the municipalities. [The German Institute of Urban Studies (Difu)] (https://difu.de/publikation/2025/kommunale-sportstaetten-grosse-s- and-Hoher-Investment Need) emphasizes that about a quarter of the municipalities have been able to build new sports facilities in the past ten years, while two thirds of their sports facilities kept constant.
The challenges of the sports infrastructure are serious, and many municipalities cannot investigate any investments due to the tense financial situation that go beyond ongoing households. A large investment offensive is essential here to secure and further expand the sports offers for the upcoming generation.
