Rescue of the city trees: New measures in Ruhlsdorfer Straße
Rescue of the city trees: New measures in Ruhlsdorfer Straße
Revision measures are currently being carried out in the busy Ruhlsdorfer Straße in Berlin, which not only extends the lifespan of the trees, but also improve the urban ecosystem. The trees along the street are exposed to strong pressure because their roots raise the sidewalk and damage the surrounding infrastructure. In order to counteract this problem, the district administration has found an alternative solution that enables the trees to maintain the trees and at the same time keep the streets safe.
Instead of cutting the roots and falling the trees, the tree beds are expanded to offer the roots more space for growing. This innovative approach not only helps to improve the health of the trees, but also has a positive impact on the environment. By sealing the surfaces, the rainwater can better seep away, which in turn contributes to the irrigation of the trees and relieves the sewage system for heavy rain.
measures and effects
The renovation measures on Ruhlsdorfer Straße remove a total of 37 parking spaces to maintain 18 trees that would otherwise have to be felled. These trees, including Japanese cord trees, benefit from the expansion of the tree beds, since they now get more water and air at the roots, which makes them more resistant to dryness.
The project is extensively monitored to gain knowledge for future measures. The stability is checked by tensile tests on the trees, while floor sensors measure moisture development in the soil. The results of these examinations are used to plan and carry out similar projects.
meaning for the environment
District City Councilor Annika Gerold emphasizes the importance of the renovation measures for the city trees and the environment in general. Healthy trees ensure shade, promote biodiversity and contribute to improving the urban climate. The sealing of the areas enables more efficient rainwater management and contributes to the cooling of the environment.
The entire project is financed from nature conservation compensation and demonstrates an innovative approach to sustainable urban development. Interested citizens can view the detailed plan of the measure on the website and receive further information.
