Reinickendorf is recovering: Parks and streets restored after storms!

The Berlin district of Reinickendorf is facing major challenges after the severe storms in June 2025. Twelve weeks after the devastating weather events, the Roads and Parks Department is now working on restoring parks, green spaces and streets. The focus is currently on the popular recreation areas, while the school locations have already reopened. In this context, extensive maintenance and felling work is planned in Kienhorstpark, including the sports facility on Ollenhauerstrasse, as well as in Schäferseepark, reports Berlin.de.

Service companies have been commissioned, especially for the Tegel amusement park, to make the areas accessible to the public again as quickly as possible. A total of 53 maintenance and felling measures are planned in the Heiligensee village meadow. The B96 is also particularly affected, where traffic safety measures are a priority. On September 11th, a strong box that had damaged a carport was secured on Egidystrasse.

Lengthy repair of storm damage

Despite this progress, the situation remains tense. Experts estimate that repairing the storm damage will take months, possibly into next spring. A total of 180,000 trees in the parks and forests need to be checked. Damage to tree crowns is often not immediately visible from below, which increases the danger. Photos from the air show the destruction in the Tegel Forest and illustrate the extent of the storm damage, as rbb24 reports. The estimated cost of the restoration is at least four million euros.

Despite the barriers, citizens' ignorance is a big problem. Employees of the parks department report that barrier tapes are repeatedly broken and the associated risks caused by hanging branches. Bernd Hildebrandt from the Parks Department warns urgently about the dangers posed by the damaged trees. In order to master the situation, district mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner has requested financial support from the Senate and asked for help from the Bundeswehr to improve logistics and technology.

Measures to adapt to climate change

In the context of current events, the discussion about adaptation to climate change is becoming increasingly important. The urban trees in climate change must be documented in the long term using various instruments in order to record and monitor their condition, as explained on Umweltbundesamt.de. Specialist authorities have already taken initiatives to improve the resilience of urban trees and prevent future storm damage.

The handicraft market in Frohnau, which can take place this weekend, represents a positive signal for the population. A solution was found to hold the market on Zeltinger and Ludolfingerplatz, which underlines the social and economic stability in the district. However, it remains to be seen how the restoration work progresses and what long-term measures will be taken to ensure the safety of trees and green spaces.
