Reinickendorf in the spirit of solidarity: anti-violence days start!
On November 3, 2025, a serious problem will be highlighted worldwide: violence against women and domestic violence. This not only affects the individual stories of those affected, but is a problem for society as a whole that affects women of all ages and from all social classes. According to BKA data from 2024, over 265,000 people were affected by domestic violence, with 73 percent of those affected being women. The figures show an increase of almost 4% compared to the previous year and this development is expected to continue in the coming years.
People with disabilities, migrants and queer people, who often have difficulty finding protection and support, are particularly affected. District mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner (CDU) emphasizes that violence against women must have no place in society. This issue will be brought into greater focus in the coming weeks, as the Anti-Violence Days will take place in the Reinickendorf district from November 21st to 30th under the motto “Reinickendorf says 'No to violence against women and girls'”.
Initiatives to combat violence
The upcoming anti-violence days are captivating numerous institutions, the district office and the advisory board for women's and girls' affairs. Together they offer events and programs designed to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women. Early prevention plays a crucial role here. The DIW emphasizes that effective protection of victims must be guaranteed primarily through preventative measures. The focus is on promoting research in accordance with the Istanbul Convention to enable evidence-based solutions.
Measures to combat violence include not only criminal prosecution, but also comprehensive victim protection. These measures are intended to increase victims' trust in systems and increase willingness to report incidents of domestic violence. Independent advice centers can help break down barriers and offer those affected the necessary contact points.
Statistical classification and outlook
The numbers speak for themselves: one in three women experience psychological or sexual violence in their life. Given these alarming statistics, there is an urgent need to develop a deeper understanding of the risk factors for violence against women and domestic violence. This can help to better target prevention and intervention measures, thereby reducing the likelihood of repeat violence.
