Protests in Berlin: Hundreds demonstrate against Israel's aid fleet stop

On Thursday evening there was a protest in Berlin with several hundred participants against the stop of a Gaza aid fleet through the Israeli Navy. It is estimated that up to 800 people gathered to express their solidarity with the activists who wanted to transport relief supplies for the Gaza Strip in an international commitment. The demonstration that started peacefully took an aggressive turn when some participants blocked tram tracks on Alexanderplatz. According to police, bottles were thrown onto the emergency services and around 50 people were arrested.

Even before the general meeting of the demonstrators, there were tangible clashes when five people smeared the entrance area of the foreign office with red color. Here, too, several arrests were made, including three women and two men who were taken into custody for attacks on police officers. The background of the protests are the military approach of Israel against the auxiliary fleet that was stopped on Wednesday evening when it approached the Gaza Strip about 70 to 80 nautical miles.

Global wave of protest

The auxiliary fleet, which included around 40 ships and sailed from Barcelona to Gaza, was referred to by Israeli soldiers as a provocation. More than 400 activists, including the well -known Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, were arrested after the catchment campaign. Thunberg and her companions are well and safe, according to the sponsoring organization. These events have triggered protests worldwide: in Spain tens of thousands demonstrated in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona against the stop of the fleet and called for an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In Rome, around 10,000 people mobilized, while in Dublin, Paris, Haag, Tunis and Buenos Aires hundreds of demonstrators also took to the streets. The international protests are directed not only against Israel, but also against the EU. Activists throw the Union complicit in the Israeli approach and call for the demolition of relationships with Israel.

Reactions from Turkey and Israel

The Turkish government sentenced Israeli commitment as a "act of terror" in international waters and denounced a violation of international law. According to Palestinian information, at least 37 people were killed in the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. Israel, on the other hand, acknowledges that none of the yachts broke the sea blockade and plans to deport the arrested activists to Europe.

The fate of the relief goods remains unclear and some activists speak of "piracy". While the Global Sumud Flotilla comprises members from dozens of countries, the activists underline their peaceful intentions, food, baby food and medication to the competitive area. In Spain, a manifesto was read out to consider the attacks on the flotilla as an attack on all of humanity.
