Public service at the limit: DBB demands 8% salary increase for employees
The clock ticks for the public service! The situation is delicious: DBB boss Ulrich Silberbach warns of an alarming lack of personnel and prophesied tariff negotiations with the federal government and municipalities. The catalog of demands is shocking: a whopping 8 percent more wages, but at least 350 euros per month! These demands are not taken out of air, but the pressing reaction to a shortage of personnel that becomes an ever greater problem in the public service.
"We are already missing 570,000 employees!" Silberbach excluded on October 9, 2024 at the presentation date of the union claims. The demographic change hits the industry hard, and in the next ten years a third of employees are facing retired. "We have to act now! If we do not ensure competitive wages and better working conditions, we are in competition with the private sector," continued Silberbach. A hard storm is brewing - and the citizens are already directly affected!
The brutal reality of the lack of personnel
The citizens clearly feel the defect and lose trust in the functionality of the state. "This is dangerous to democracy! We have to reverse this trend now," says Silberbach urgently. He lists the necessary measures: noticeable income increases, more attractive working conditions and - very centrally - additional three free days and flexible working hours! Volker Geyer, board member of the collective bargaining policy of the DBB, emphasizes that the working time accounts must be designed flexibly and according to the needs of the labor: "This could include the introduction of a shortened working week, more vacation days or sabbaticals!"
A quick solution is required! The DBB emphasizes the urgent need to transfer the tariff results to the civil servant area at the same time. "This is not only factual, but also ethically mandatory! Only in this way this income round becomes a success," explains Silberbach and illustrates the urgency of these topics.
The far -reaching effects
Did you know that over 2.6 million employees are directly or indirectly affected by the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD)? Around 1.7 million employees and trainees, including over 156,000 from the federal government and more than 1.5 million from the municipalities! In addition, there are almost 370,000 federal civil servants and almost 600,000 supply recipients who rely on the adjustments.
All of this will have a decisive impact on the negotiations that start on January 24, 2025 in Potsdam. An urgency that both the employees and the citizens urgently need to tackle! You can find more details on the website of the DBB: www.dbb.de/ income round.
