New shine for school sports: Robert-Havemann-Gymnasium shines!

On October 5, 2025, the successfully renovated school sports facility of the Robert Havemann Gymnasium in Achillesstrasse was inaugurated. Jörn Pasternack, district councilor for school, sports and facility management, as well as representatives of SV Karow 96 e. V. visited the modernized facility, which is one of the largest locations in Pankow in terms of coherent open spaces. The sports open areas had suffered from a desolate state for years, due to the lack of financial means and vandalism.

A decision template for the complete renovation of the system was signed in August 2022. Originally, a budget of 1.3 million euros was provided, but additional measures were necessary to meet the sports facilities. In addition to an Abitur-relevant 100-meter career, the renovations also include a long and triple jumping facility as well as various ball play areas and an artificial turf pitch.

Extensive renovation measures

In addition to the basic renewal, a new beach volleyball system was built, which offers promising opportunities for students and club members. A cleaning ramp was also installed, and the garden house for storing heavy sports equipment in the Krafprint area is to be completed in the near future. The construction of the garden house makes it easier for teachers to transport the devices via the system, which makes sports operations more efficient.

In the coming school year, the Robert Havemann-Gymnasium will carry out a skiing to Lappach in the South Tyrolean Alps, which takes place from January 24th to 31, 2026. The departure is planned for Friday evening, January 23, 2026. Only the future vintages 10 and 11 may participate, whereby students from the coming 9th year can also ride with open capacities. Further information on the planning and the conditions of participation will be announced at the beginning of the school year 2025/2026.

Political support for sports rooms

The importance of sports rooms for sport is increasingly recognized by politics. This can be seen in a variety of initiatives to combat the renovation traffic jam at German sports facilities. Programs for promoting width, leisure and school sports are available at various levels, including EU, federal, state and municipal grants. Municipalities and associations are required to identify suitable funding programs and to demonstrate their eligibility.

Various organizations offer comprehensive support that help research, application and billing funding. In addition, feasibility studies are carried out to assess the modernization or new construction of sports facilities. The focus is on the need, use, the location, the financing and the company.

The renovation of the Robert-Havemann-Gymnasium's sports facility is a prime example of the positive change in the field of sports infrastructure. Such projects not only benefit from the students, but also to the entire community.
