Royal road becomes a bicycle highway: construction work begins!
Construction work on the Königsweg in Berlin will begin on October 10, 2025 to convert two sections into a bicycle route. According to a report by the Senate Administration A total of 1,300 meters of the street will be redesigned. The aim is to make conditions safer and more comfortable for cyclists.
In the period from September 17th to 26th, 2025, the road surface will also be renovated by the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office. The cycle path is marked and signposted by infraVelo to increase safety and visibility for cyclists and pedestrians.
Remodeling and improvements
The sections that will be rebuilt include the area between the turning hammers on Katteweg and Am Waldhaus street as well as the section between Clauertstrasse and Idsteiner Strasse. The conversion is intended to significantly improve cycling traffic through measures such as the establishment of safety lanes and large red markings at intersections. These measures are designed to reduce vehicle traffic and thus increase safety for all road users.
In addition, Tietzenweg will be converted into a bicycle route in October. The renovation of the northern Tietzenweg between Gardeschützenweg and Unter den Eichen starts on October 20, 2025. These projects are carried out in collaboration between the Senate Department for Mobility, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district and infraVelo.
Special features of bicycle streets
Bicycle streets offer some specific features: bicycle traffic has priority, while motor vehicles are only permitted as residents. Cyclists are allowed to ride next to each other and the speed limit is a maximum of 30 km/h. Garbage trucks, ambulances and fire departments have access to the bicycle lane at all times. Special markings such as pictograms and the color design of the lane contribute to safety. These improvements are part of a comprehensive plan to promote cycling most ADFC also supported.
Growing interest in cycling
The growing importance of cycling is also illustrated by the results of the current edition of “Bicycle Monitor 2023”. According to that Federal Ministry of Transport 46 percent of Germans plan to ride their bikes or Pedelecs more often in the future. A quarter of those surveyed plan to purchase a bicycle or pedelec within the next year. The focus is particularly on Pedelecs, which are enjoying increasing popularity.
The feeling of safety while cycling has also increased: 60 percent of cyclists feel very or mostly safe while cycling. The main reasons cited for insecurity are the more considerate behavior of drivers and excessive traffic. This shows how important it is to continually improve the infrastructure for cyclists.
The redesigns on Königsweg and the renovation of Tietzenweg are part of a larger initiative to promote cycling in Berlin, which aims to create a safe and attractive environment for all road users.
