Climate festival in Friedrichsfelde: Feel the environmental protection live!

On Saturday, July 12, 2025, a special event will take place in Berlin: The Traffic and Climate Festival. The event, which will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the traffic school at Baikalstrasse 4 in Friedrichsfelde, aims to raise public awareness of climate-friendly mobility. District mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) will welcome the participants at 1:00 p.m., followed by an official opening at 2:00 p.m. by district councilors Sandy Mattes (SPD) and Filiz Keküllüoğlu (Alliance 90/The Greens).

The festival offers a diverse program tailored to all age groups. Among other things, environmental magician Freddie Rutz will impart climate knowledge with his magic show. The traffic school will allow free rental of cargo bikes for private use. Other activities include trying out climate-friendly vehicles, making cleaning products and herbal salts, and crafting with natural materials. For the younger festival visitors there will be a sing-along with the songwriter Meykl Milky at 4 p.m., and a slowness competition is also on the program.

Technical information and offers

In addition, information is provided on topics such as climate-friendly mobility, food sharing, climate and nature conservation as well as advice on rainwater use. The Berlin police will also offer free registration for bicycles brought along. A selection of food and drinks, accompanied by live music from the Cuban trio Palmera, ensures the physical well-being of the visitors.

The need for such events becomes apparent in the context of current climate goals. The transport sector is responsible for around 22% of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany, with an increase in these emissions of 9 percentage points since 1990. In order to achieve the climate targets set in the transport sector, a reduction in emissions of 65% is necessary by 2030, even by 88% by 2040 and from 2045 the sector should be greenhouse gas neutral, as is the case Umweltbundesamt reports. The transport sector has so far only fallen by 10.9% since 1990, underscoring the urgency of initiatives to promote sustainable mobility.

Importance of sustainable mobility

The importance of sustainable mobility is also emphasized by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. In 2019, traffic in Germany emitted a total of 165 million tons of CO2, which is almost the same as in 1990. The need for a profound transformation of the mobility industry is abundantly clear. The EU's CO2 emissions standards set clear limits, and the federal government is promoting electric vehicles with purchase bonuses to encourage citizens to adopt more environmentally friendly mobility. A crucial factor in increasing the share of sustainable transport is improving the infrastructure for public transport, bicycles and pedestrians.

The traffic and climate festival in Berlin is not only an opportunity to actively address the issue of climate protection, but also to discover practical, environmentally friendly alternatives. The combination of fun and information will help to raise awareness of the necessary measures to reduce emissions in transport and thus contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. For further information on the specific measures in the transport sector, the Federal Agency for Civic Education can be consulted.
