Small cities as a solution? Minister's proposal encounters criticism

cheek, no solution: why the proposal of the Minister of Construction does not offer any answers

It is a problem that is emerging in many major cities in Germany: people are desperately looking for affordable living space. But the politicians' proposed solutions are often questionable.

A current proposal by Minister of Construction Klara Geywitz triggered outrage. It encouraged people to move away from the cities and to search for empty houses in rural areas. With the possibility of home office and other flexible work models you can finally work anywhere. But this proposal is more than not a solution - it is a cheek.

Yes, there are people who like to live in the country. And yes, it is important that there is also a good infrastructure in rural areas. But the same applies to the big cities. People who are looking for an apartment in trendy districts such as Berlin-Kreuzberg or the Hamburg hill are not only doing this for professional reasons. You want to live right there because you appreciate the attitude to life of these quarters. And just as people want the city, the city also needs people - not just those who can afford the expensive rent.

The suggestion of Klara Geywitz ignores the needs of many professions that are indispensable for the functioning of a city. Firefighters, educators, nurses and sellers are just as much a part of it as students. But affordable living space has often become unaffordable for them.

And this is not the only thing that is the fault of Klara Geywitz. The rental prices are constantly increasing in the metropolitan areas and large cities, and the traffic light coalition has so far not presented any convincing solutions. The promised new construction goals are regularly missed. The rental price brake has not yet had its effect.

affordable living space must not be a luxury

The housing shortage is one of the biggest social problems in this country. And the political concepts for the solution are often half -hearted and inadequate. People not only need empty apartments in the country, but also affordable apartments in the big cities.

The politicians must understand that affordable living space is not a luxury, but a fundamental right. And you have to act to ensure this fundamental right for all citizens. Whether mobile work or rural apartments - these suggestions do not help to solve the problem. It is time for politics to redeem its promises and take concrete measures. People have a right to live in the city where they want to work and live.
