on the importance of city trees

city trees play a central role in the urban environment by performing numerous ecosystem services. These include the improvement of the microclimate, the storage of carbon and reducing the water drainage. According to the Center Stadtnatur and climate adaptation , these functions are particularly important in the context of climate change. The interactive exhibition "Your neighborhood trees" aims to bring these important aspects closer to a broad public.

climate change increasingly changes the location conditions for city trees, which are now exposed to extreme conditions such as soil compression, air and soil pollutants and artificial light. As the Environmental Federal Agency , many city trees only reach half of their potential age. In order to extend this lifespan and improve the functions of the trees, a targeted election of tree species is essential, which is adapted to the future urban climate.
