Joachim Tiburtius Bridge in Steglitz: closure from September 22nd!
The Joachim Tiburtius Bridge in Berlin-Steglitz will be completely closed for several weeks from Monday, September 22, 2025. This was announced by the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment. The bridge, which was built in 1971, shows severe signs of wear and tear. A transition structure that was installed in 1992 is also badly worn and can no longer withstand current traffic loads. The renovation work is necessary to ensure traffic safety.
The planned work includes the renewal of steel and rubber sealing profiles as well as corrosion protection. The bridge closure is expected to last until October 24, 2025. During this time, vehicle traffic will be rerouted. Eastern diversions via Neue Filandastrasse and Albrechtstrasse and western diversions via Lepsiusstrasse and Grunewaldstrasse are available. Parking spaces on the bridge over Schloßstraße cannot be used during the entire construction period.
Traffic regulations during the closure
When traffic is rerouted, the entrance and exit from the A103 motorway in the direction of Neue Filandastraße remains usable, but turning towards Schildhornstraße is not possible. It is more important to mention that BVG regular services and traffic on Schloßstrasse are not affected by the construction work.
These construction measures are part of a more comprehensive renovation program that has become necessary due to the general traffic situation in Berlin. According to rbb24, more than 60 bridges in Berlin urgently need to be renovated. Following the tragic collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden, bridge investigation measures in Berlin revealed that 63 bridges were in inadequate condition. In every district there are dilapidated bridges that endanger the safety of traffic routes.
Need for renovation in Berlin
There are a number of bridges in the many districts that need urgent attention. The Mitte district has the most problematic structures, with 16 dilapidated bridges. The worst bridge, the Flughafenseesteig in Reinickendorf, has a shocking condition rating of 3.8. In the coming years, renovations are planned for other bridges in various districts, including the Bar Bridge in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, which is scheduled to be renovated in 2025, and several bridges in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the renovation period for which will also begin in 2025.
The planned measures to secure the transport infrastructure are urgently needed in order to avoid accidents like the one at the Carola Bridge in the future. BZ Berlin and rbb24 report in detail about the condition of the bridge and the upcoming construction work.
