Flood disaster in Russia: rivers reach critical levels
The flood situation in the southern Ural Mountains of Russia is further exacerbated. In Orenburg, the Urals river was 9.78 meters high on Wednesday morning, about half a meter above the critical brand. This meant that parts of the big city were under water. Experts predict a further increase in water by 30 to 70 centimeters.
According to the authorities report, 12,800 houses and 14,900 garden plots were flooded in the administrative area of Orenburg, which led to the evacuation of more than 7,000 people. As a result of the floods, substations had to be switched off, which was accompanied by power failures. The situation forced courts to set their work and bring museums to safety. The population grows dissatisfaction with the authorities because the help only arrives slowly. President Vladimir Putin reacted to the situation by ordering increased police cartridges to prevent looting. Nevertheless, calls sounded for help on the streets, such as "Putin help!".
The flood is favored by massive snow and ice melt in the Ural Mountains, which is accompanied by rainfall. Orsk, a city in the Orenburg area, is particularly badly affected because the dams broke. Critics complain that the preparation for spring floods in Russia has been inadequate for years. Julia Nawalnaja, a Putin critic, indicated the repeated lack of willingness of the government to prepare for natural disasters.
