Raised bed festival in the Kosmosviertel: Plants, celebrations and living as neighbors!

On October 7th a very special event took place in the Kosmosviertel: the “Raised Bed Festival”. Organized by the neighborhood management and the Treptow-Köpenick district office, people were invited to a planting campaign between Siriusstrasse and the “Gold Nugget” from 3 p.m. Attractions such as music, barbecue and a salad buffet from the neighborhood made the event a social experience for all residents.

As part of the festival, five new raised beds were inaugurated, which were completed in June 2025. These smaller raised beds replace the previously existing, larger, high-maintenance models that were looked after by volunteer neighbors. The new raised beds are now planted and maintained by the neighborhood itself, which not only shares responsibility but also strengthens the sense of community.

Sustainability in focus

An important feature of this new planting is sustainability. The raised beds are watered with rainwater from the roof of the adjacent Edeka building. A cooperation with “Outreach Mobile Youth Work” also supports the construction of a water tank with seating near the raised beds. Even before the new plants were sown, a dedicated group sowed green manure to optimally prepare the soil.

Plant selection follows an environmentally friendly approach, providing insect-friendly and native plants that are well suited to hot, dry locations. This also takes into account the trend of urban gardening, which has become increasingly important in major German cities. In such neighborhood gardens, social exchange is promoted and space is provided for ecological education greenthumbpath.de reported.

Strengthen community and cohesion

The new raised beds are not only a step toward greening the neighborhood, but also an opportunity to strengthen a sense of community among residents. Community care and planting not only promotes social interaction, but also strengthens local cohesion. The project was made possible by the federal-state program “Future Urban Green” and the urban development funding program for social cohesion, which underlines the relevance of such initiatives to support neighborhood projects.

In times when urban gardening is becoming increasingly popular, such projects are an important part of urban development. They not only create green oases, but also places for meetings and exchanges. In the future, seating and a roof are planned around the raised beds, which will further improve the offering for residents.

The raised bed festival in the Kosmosviertel shows how important and enriching community projects can be for living together in the city. The initiatives that are born from the neighborhood make a decisive contribution to ecological and social sustainability in urban areas and set a positive tone for the future of the city.
