Festival 'Waves of Freedom' illuminates the fights for democracy in Hong Kong and Taiwan
"Waves of Freedom" - a festival for democracy and human rights
to commemorate the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, the “Waves of Freedom” festival will be found this year from August 11th to 13th, 2023 in the Stasi headquarters. The program of the festival contains documentary and feature films as well as a award-winning virtual reality film that illuminate the battles of the people in Hong Kong and Taiwan for democratic rights and against repression, censorship and lack of freedom. Visitors also have the opportunity to explore the Stasi documents archive and take part in tours. There are also discussions with the filmmakers and experts.
The kick-off of the festival on Friday, August 11, 2023, includes a tour of the Stasi documents archive in German, followed by the opening and demonstration of the short films "K’s Room" from Taiwan and "That Spring, in the Sky of H-Ville, what ___" from Hong Kong. Afterwards there is a conversation with Alexandra Titze, the Vice President of the Federal Archives, and Prof. Shieh Jhy-Wey, the representative of Taiwan in the Federal Republic.
On Saturday, August 12, 2023, the visitor center "Haus 22" is all about VR films. The award -winning film "The Man Who Couldn’t Leave" from Taiwan is shown there all day. In addition, there is a tour of the Stasi documents archive in English and the film screening of "Blue Island" from Hong Kong and Japan. In the evening there is an English -language conversation on the subject of "Archiving Personal History" with writer Marko Martin, filmmaker Tze Woon Chan and filmmaker Singing Chen.
On Sunday, August 13, 2023, "The Man Who Couldn’t Leave" in the "House 22" visitor center is shown in a VR film screening. In addition, the film screening of "Untold Herstory" from Taiwan takes place. In the evening there is an English -language conversation with the filmmakers Tze Woon Chan and Singing Chen on the subject of "Documentary and VR: A Journey Through History".
The "Waves of Freedom" festival takes place in the courtyard of the Stasi headquarters, more precisely in Ruschestrasse 103, 10365 Berlin. The location is very easy to reach by public transport, especially with the U5 subway line, Magdalenenstraße stop.

The "Waves of Freedom" festival is a cooperation between the Taiwanese curator Jaye Lin and Hong Kong curator Karen Cheung, as well as the Robert Havemann Society e.V. The Stasi Document Archive in the Federal Archives also supports the festival. The event is funded by the Lichtenberg district office and the Ministry of Culture Taiwan and Taipei City Funds. In addition, the Robert Havemann Society receives support from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media and the Berlin representative for the processing of the SED dictatorship.
