Festival Dance in August: Cross borders, celebrate diversity!

The 37th International Festival “Tanz im August” begins on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 under the artistic direction of Ricardo Carmona. This third edition of the festival takes place in Berlin until August 30th and presents a wide range of 20 productions, including three world premieres and ten German premieres. The festival will span nine different venues, including HAU Hebbel am Ufer, the Alte Münze Berlin and the Radialsystem. Opening night will include the German premiere of “Derniers Feux” by choreographer Némo Flouret, whose work explores the human experience and its limitations.

A striking feature of this year's edition is the almost complete absence of major dance companies from Europe and the USA, which appears to be partly due to financial constraints. In addition, the lack of presence of productions from Eastern Europe has been a blind spot in the festival for years.

Thematic focuses and international contributions

The festival program is primarily characterized by young artists from all over the world. The focus is on the topics of overcoming borders and conflicts, the creation of new communities and socio-political issues such as classism, racism and neo-colonialism. The current political relevance of the productions cannot be overlooked, especially against the background of increasing discrimination against the queer community. RBB reports that the thematic focus is on queer feminist, non-binary and trans identity content.

Among the international artists are notable contributions such as Inka Romaní's “Fandango Reloaded,” which combines traditional Valencian movement with urban styles, and Nora Chipaumire's “Dambudzo,” which addresses resistance to neocolonial control. Radouan Mriziga from Marrakech focuses on cultural and mythological aspects of North Africa in “Magec / the Desert”.

A diverse range of events

“Tanz im August” also offers numerous additional events that enrich the festival experience. This includes public discussions, workshops and relaxed performances. There are also special offers for younger visitors, such as the youth ticket initiative, which allows children and young people up to 14 years of age to enter for just 5 euros when accompanied by an adult. The festival thus enabling broad access to contemporary dance and cultural exchange.

The discussion of socio-political issues runs through the entire event. Artists like Clara Furey and Daniel Mariblanca explore the visibility of trans experiences and erotic collective power, while Oona Doherty tells working-class familial stories in Specky Clark.

With a variety of impressive performances and a clear focus on social issues, the festival expects a broad audience and marks an important step in the representation of diversity in contemporary dance. Ticket sales are already over www.tanzimaugust.de available, with the HAU2 festival center open daily until 11 p.m. after the performances.
