The left after the European elections: What does the party really want? Article analysis and outlook

The Left Party is in a difficult phase after the European elections and a livelier -threatening defeat. Various papers are now written to define the goals and orientation of the party more clearly. However, there are many different voices and it is difficult to recognize a clear course forward. A central problem is the weakness of the party, which was already on the way of consolidation after the Wagenknecht Group's exit. However, the split -off of the group has increased the differences within the party and there is disagreement on how the party can be strengthened again.

Some members, as Chairman Martin Schirdewan and the long -time parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch, want to strengthen the party in their old stronghold, the east. Others, such as board member Daphne Weber, propose a western campaign because there is greater voter potential here. The discussion about the right procedure is still in progress.

It is discussed whether the party could improve its image as a social advocacy by introducing a mandate limit for MPs and an obligation to donate part of their income for social purposes. However, it is emphasized that this alone is not a sufficient and effective strategy to make the party visible as a political factor. Instead, it is recommended that the party will quickly come together to define some key points and to represent them determined.

It is also emphasized that the assumption that the left is no longer concerned about the social, is not correct. The social question was always the focus, even in the period of internal discussion with Wagenknecht. However, the party has to find ways to become politically effective again.

Time is urgently urgent because the party congress takes place in Halle in mid -October and the state elections in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia are also to be processed. It is not expected to report victory reports. A lot is required, including renewal, profiling, programmatic further development, better structures and a new leadership. Changes in the party leadership also seem to be a way.

to get back on course, the left feedback from political partners, associations, organizations and representatives of civil society demands. However, what the party itself actually wants.

Here is a table with information on the current state elections in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia:

| Land | Date of choice |
| - | - |
| Brandenburg | September 1, 2019 |
| Saxony | September 1, 2019 |
| Thuringia | October 27, 2019 |

It remains to be seen how the party will position itself in the coming months and whether it can overcome her weakness in order to be perceived as a political player again. The party congress in October will be an important milestone in this process.
