Demonstration in Treptow: Citizens demand an end to the A100 traffic jam!
On Friday afternoon, several hundred people gathered in Berlin-Treptow to demonstrate against the new section of the A100. This rally was organized by an alliance of various associations and initiatives, including Changing Cities, the pedestrian association FUSS and the ADFC Treptow-Köpenick. Banners with slogans such as “Cities for people instead of cars” and “Traffic change now” dominated the image of the demonstration, which was peaceful and took place without any significant incidents, as a police spokesman confirmed.
The reason for the protests lies in the massive traffic problems that have been the order of the day since the opening of this new A100 section on August 27, 2025. Residents report daily traffic jams and heavy traffic in North Treptow. The Berlin traffic information center even had to close the bridge to the A100 towards Treptow during the demonstration. The “Stop A100 Action Alliance” criticized the fact that bus lanes, cycle paths and pedestrian traffic lights are often blocked, which creates dangerous situations for pedestrians, especially children.
Traffic chaos as a result of the opening
The new section of the A100, which runs from the Neukölln triangle to the Treptow junction, was officially opened on Thursday before the protests. Those responsible had already pointed out difficulties before it was put into operation: the construction of the Elsenbrücke, known as a traffic bottleneck in the region, had previously worsened the traffic situation. Now the situation for pedestrians and cyclists around the junction is even more tense.
Adelheid Rehmann from the Kunger Kiez Initiative called for more support from the Senate for better traffic management. There are calls for alternative traffic control or even the temporary closure of the new 16th section. The residents suffer from the fragile transport connections and the constant congestion, which significantly affects the quality of life in the region.
Mobility in transition
The current challenges in the transport sector are in the context of the mobility transition, which is a central aspect of urban development. According to that Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport The mobility transition aims at new concepts and alternative means of transport in order to reduce motorized individual transport. The focus is on the three keywords avoidance, relocation and improvement.
The mobility transition requires sustainable planning to expand the pedestrian and cycle path network and at the same time promote new, environmentally friendly means of transport. In this context, it is becoming increasingly important to take into account the specific needs of residents and provide reliable data for assessing mobility in urban regions.
