Colorful bench in the landscape park: children enjoy helping to create!

A colorful bench was inaugurated today in the Johannisthal Landscape Park, which was the result of a creative campaign by the Roads and Parks Department. This action took place as part of the family festival “District Office for Participation” in Adlershof. The bench offers children the opportunity to immortalize their creative ideas with waterproof pens by creating drawings, sayings or their names. The young participants also had the chance to vote on the location of the bank, with the majority choosing the picturesque Johannisthal Landscape Park. The new resting point was set up near the roller skating field and at Hermann-Dorner-Allee.

Dr. Claudia Leistner, the district councilor, was positive about the active participation of the children and the choice of location. “District Office for Participation” is an open day that offers hands-on activities and advice. The Roads and Parks Department is responsible for the maintenance of public green spaces and ensures that new benches are installed in the green spaces and playgrounds and that old, out-of-place benches are replaced. When selecting locations, citizens' suggestions are taken into account and implemented depending on financial possibilities.

The Johannisthal Landscape Park

The Johannisthal Landscape Park plays a central role in the Johannisthal/Adlershof urban development project. It has a compensatory function for the unavoidable interventions in nature and the landscape that arise from building construction projects. The aim of the measures is to maintain and further develop the species richness of the dry grassland locations. Hiding structures for sand lizards were created for the fauna, while woody plantings serve as breeding places for birds.

Maintenance in this landscape protection area is carried out through strip mowing that is gentle on insects and reptiles. Staggered mowing keeps animals safe and supports biodiversity. In the adjacent nature reserve, a flock of sheep helps to keep the more competitive growth low and contributes to the preservation of the special vegetation.

A look beyond the borders

The advantages of well-designed landscape parks are not just limited to Johannisthal. An example of the successful use of industrial and natural areas is the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, which attracts an average of one million visitors every year. This natural and cultural landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia has been combining industrial heritage with modern natural design since 1994 and is known for its impressive light installations. “The Guardian” named the park one of the ten most beautiful urban oases in the world.

Visitors to this park can enjoy a variety of activities ranging from scuba diving, climbing to hiking. The idea of sustainability also extends to the family-friendly offerings such as large slides, play areas and a children's farm. Those interested can also book guided tours about the industrial history of the park. As in the Johannisthal Landscape Park, great emphasis is placed on preserving nature, which contributes to the attractiveness of the parks for both locals and tourists.
