Berlin Castle for Women's European Championships 2029: Surprising playground choice!
Berlin, Deutschland - The future European Football Championship of women in 2029 in Germany will have to do without games in the capital Berlin. The Presidium of the German Football Association (DFB) decided this in a current meeting. Instead, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Wolfsburg were selected as official candidate cities. The decision follows the recommendation of an expert committee that has examined the applications of a total of eleven cities and stadiums, including the unobserved places Gelsenkirchen and Rostock as well as previously excluded cities such as Hamburg, Bremen and Essen. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf was optimistic about the International application process and the final candidacy.
The decision where the European Championship 2029 will actually be held is to be made by the UEFA Executive Committee in December 2023. In addition to Germany, Denmark and Sweden will also take part in the competition in the coming year (2025) as a duo as well as Poland, Portugal and Italy as individual applicants. Germany had to give up against Brazil in the award of the 2027 World Cup, together with Belgium and the Netherlands.
