Railway chaos in the Frankfurt area: Massive construction work until May!
Deutsche Bahn has started to carry out important construction work on the route between Hanau and Gelnhausen in the Main-Kinzig district. This work, which started on April 17, 2025 at 9 p.m., should last until 5 a.m. by May 2, 2025. During this time there will be considerable restrictions in regional traffic between Fulda, Hanau and Frankfurt. Travelers have to adapt to longer travel times and a rail replacement traffic between Hanau and Wächtersbach, such as the Kreis-anzeiger reported.
Fern traffic from and to Frankfurt is also affected. On the Berlin - Kassel - Frankfurt connection, there will now only be two -hour connections instead of the previous hour. The travel time on this route is extended by about 35 minutes. The ICE line Berlin-Göttingen-Frankfurt-Karlsruhe is also diverted, which means that stops in Berlin-Spandau, Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Göttingen and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe.
extensive construction work in Germany
These measures are part of a more comprehensive modernization program of Deutsche Bahn, which aims to renovate the rail network in Germany. Massive construction work is planned by 2030, which will affect around 40 important sections. This leads to a variety of large construction sites and thus also to extensive route closures and timetable changes. According to ADAC , massive impairments can be expected for millions of travelers.
in 2025, the following construction work should be emphasized:
- Hamm - Hanover: December 15, 2024 to December 13, 2025, months of restricted train traffic.
- Knoten Berlin: February 18 to December 13, 2025, diverted IC line, no stop in Berlin Südkreuz and Central Station.
- Erfurt - Nuremberg: 5. to April 25, 2025 with various construction work.
- Fulda - Frankfurt a. M.: April 17 to May 2, 2025, tracks, overhead lines and bridges are modernized.
- Mannheim - Stuttgart: April 17 to June 6, 2025 with travel time.
These extensive work is necessary to maintain the infrastructure and to meet the increasing demands of travelers. However, travelers have to be patient, since the construction work is carried out not only during the time in Frankfurt, but also on many other routes in Germany. As part of the program, rail operations will be noticeably influenced by 2030.
While these large construction projects are promoted, it remains important for travelers to regularly inform themselves about current information and possible alternatives in order to be able to plan their journey accordingly. Many expect the effects that such construction work can have on their everyday life.
