Ahlen students triumph at the mini marathon in Berlin!

On October 6, 2025, a special event took place as part of the annual mini marathon in Berlin, which celebrated the long-standing city partnership between Berlin and the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Ahlen. Ahlen has been sending 30 students to Berlin for almost 30 years to take part in this event, and this year the young people were again full of energy and anticipation.

The students qualified for participation in their hometown. As part of the mini marathon, the guests from Ahlen are accommodated in the partner district and cared for, which further consolidates the close connection between the cities. District Mayor Jörn Oltmann welcomed the young people at a solemn reception in the John-F.-Kennedy hall of the Schöneberg town hall and wished them much success for the upcoming sporting challenges.

The mini marathon as a community experience

At the mini marathon, which takes place the day before the Great Berlin Marathon, 23 students and 6 carers from Ahlen started. For many young people, the journey on Friday at lunchtime became a special experience. Together with Oltmann and the city twinning commissioner Mirka Schuster, everyone enjoyed dinner in the sports casino and strengthened their team spirit.

The route of the mini marathon led the participants over 4.2 kilometers through varied and historical parts of Berlin, including the Gendarmenmarkt, Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate. Particularly noteworthy is the performance of the fastest Ahlener, Titus Heidrich, who completed the route in 16:19 minutes. Gen-Lenox Seiler and Natanael Kahase provided further strong results.

placement name Time (minutes)
1. Titus Heidrich 16:19
2. Gen-Lenox Rope 16:41
3. Natanael Kahase 16:42

In addition, there were remarkable achievements in different age groups, such as those of Abdulah Khodro, Sabiha Hannemann and Lotte Eckervogt. All participants came to the finish line healthy and happily and enjoyed leisure activities in the afternoon before they celebrated their success in the evening at an internal award ceremony in the district.

The importance of the town twinning

During the reception, Jörn Oltmann emphasized the immense importance of young people for the further development of the city twinning. Berlin maintains partnerships with 19 cities worldwide. This internationality not only supports the exchange of culture and science, but also the connection between the citizens of the partner cities. In addition to sporting events, the cooperation also includes educational and cultural exchange projects that strengthen social cohesion and open up new perspectives.

The long-term tradition of the mini marathon and the associated participation of the Ahlen team is an impressive example of the active care of such partnerships. A particularly big moment is coming up next year: the 30th participation of an Ahlen team at the mini marathon is planned and preparations are already underway. The cooperation and the exchange between Berlin and Ahlen are valuable contributions to international networking and strengthen the friendship between the cities.
