75 years IJGD: Celebrate and fight for voluntary services in Berlin
An anniversary with explosive demands! The International Youth Community Services (IJGD) celebrate 75 years of voluntary services - and this is not without the highest alarm! While the big ceremony will soon be imminent in Berlin on September 27, 2024, there are massive budget cuts that endanger the future of these important orders! Over 4,000 young helpers are committed to a considerable extent annually, but the threat to politics could destroy everything!
What started in Hanover 75 years ago is an impressive story. Students, driven by the idea of reducing prejudices through international encounters, kept the torch of the engagement up. The first work camps after the Second World War not only helped the reconstruction, but also created the basis for an organization that works for community and peace.
alarming cuts in sight!
But the joy of the anniversary is clouded. The Federal Government's current budget planning provides to shorten the budgets for the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) and the Federal Voluntary Service (BFD) by comprehensive 40 million euros! That means serious dangers for the voluntary services and the future of thousands of future volunteers!
that would not be alarm enough, additional challenges come to light! Massive price increases present organizations and deployments for unsolvable problems. The cuts mean that the number of available places will drop drastically, which significantly limits the commitment opportunities for many young people.
In the Red Rathaus, numerous former voluntary and top -class guests gather on September 27, 2024 to draw attention to these services and the threats that threaten the voluntary service. In a panel discussion, on which, among other things, the director of the IJGD, Edith Eike, and member of the Bundestag Emilia more firmly, the indispensable role of voluntary services is discussed for internal social cohesion.
what has to happen now?
In order to save and expand the commitment of the young generation, the sponsors and associations require a legal claim to a voluntary service. This would not only be a secure financing, but also a doubling of the volunteer numbers by 2030! for democracy and society are such changes in vital!
Ceremony on September 27, 2024 - be there!
