Central memorial service for the homeless: Marzahn-Hellersdorf mourns together

On Monday, November 24th, 2025, a central funeral service for those officially buried will take place in Berlin-Marzahn-Hellersdorf. This special event, held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the studio stage at Freizeitforum Marzahn (Marzahner Promenade 55, 12679 Berlin), highlights the importance of commemoration for those who had to be buried without relatives. This year, over 155 such burials were carried out in Marzahn-Hellersdorf alone, while throughout Berlin it affects around 2,700 people every year who have no relatives.

The district office, under the leadership of district councilor Gordon Lemm, invites both citizens and the press to this dignified occasion. The course of the event is carefully planned:

Process of the funeral service

In order to commemorate this celebration, registration is recommended by Monday, November 17, 2025 at the latest. Those interested can contact via email antonia.paskalski@ba-mh.berlin.de or valerie.pflaumer@ba-mh.berlin.de register.

Social significance of commemoration

The funeral service is not only an expression of compassion, but also an important step in society to honor those who have been forgotten. Given the high number of burials without identifiable relatives, the memory of each individual should be a priority. The event not only promotes remembrance, but also awareness of the fate of these people.

In today's world, when society is becoming increasingly more inclusive and empathetic, it is essential that such people also receive a final appreciation. With this funeral service, the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office is sending a sign of community and respect for the deceased who, for various reasons, had no relatives and whose memory is often lost.
