Workshop for single parents: Discover strengths and ensure success!
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, an interactive workshop entitled “Self-determined paths – Find your strengths for your career” took place at Ingeus GmbH in Berlin. The event was aimed specifically at single mothers and fathers and was organized by the district's equal opportunities officer and other partners. The main aim of the workshop was to strengthen the participants on their way to a self-determined professional future, as berlin.de reports.
From 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., participants received valuable instructions on how to recognize their personal strengths and use them in a targeted manner. Particular attention was paid to preparing for job interviews, so that practical tips for the three phases of such an interview were provided. The workshop also offered space for exchange, mutual support and network contacts among the participants.
Childcare and free participation
A plus point of the event was the free childcare, which made it easier for parents to take part. In order to ensure that the offer is met, participants had to indicate the number and age of their children when registering. The organizers emphasized that the event was part of the focus year “Strong Connections – A Year for Single Parents”, which focuses on the compatibility of family and work.
In addition to this initiative, the “AIDA” project places particular focus on supporting single parents returning to work. The aim is to enable a better compatibility of family and professional life, as bfw.de notes.
Comprehensive support from AIDA
The “AIDA” program offers, among other things, communication training, IT skills and support in the application process. Initial discussions determine the strengths and interests of the participants in order to develop individual professional goals. The courses include up to three modules, covering topics such as time management, social skills and a health-conscious lifestyle. Participants also have the opportunity to complete internships to gain insights into their dream career.
In Germany, 83% of single parents are mothers, 42% of whom work full-time. However, according to dgb.de, many of these parents have limited access to further training and advancement opportunities. Works and staff councils can make a valuable contribution here by asking about the needs of single-parent colleagues and developing strategies to improve working conditions.
The initiatives and programs offered in Berlin and by organizations such as AIDA and DGB aim to promote the compatibility of family and career. With a clear focus on the special challenges of single parents, these measures are important to make it easier for them to return to work.
