History and development of winter playgrounds

Winter playgrounds are an important place to go, especially for parents and children, to find a place to play, especially in the cold season. The term “winter playground” is protected and the rights belong to the Berlin City Mission, which first implemented this concept in Kreuzberg in 1994. At that time, Pastor Andreas Berthold initiated the first institution, from which many imitators and support from church associations developed.

In recent years, the demand for winter playgrounds has steadily increased, which can sometimes lead to a lack of space. Volunteers are therefore always welcome to help maintain the offerings. Especially in the districts of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Reinickendorf and Pankow, parents and children find numerous opportunities to spend time together and be active.

Overall, this initiative is supported by numerous local sports clubs and church institutions. For families looking for additional play options, there are also commercial indoor playgrounds and bouldering halls in Berlin, which also offer excellent leisure activities.
