Warning of the EU budget: social projects in danger!
alarm level red in the social landscape of Europe! The Federal Working Group on Free Welfare Care (BAGFW) is making the highest warning signals from 2028 due to alarming plans by the EU Commission. The unveiled designs could mean that for essential support programs such as the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) - a disaster for numerous social projects!
Especially at a time when social justice is indispensable, this radical realignment of the budget could endanger support for disadvantaged groups in Germany and all over Europe. "With these plans, social cohesion in Europe is massively endangered," warns Michael Groß, President of Bagfw. The focus of the upcoming restructuring is clearly placed on competitiveness, while the social projects are pushed into the background. Is that really the way that Europe wants to take?
an unsustainable change of course
The current measures provide to give up the proven regional and agricultural policy. Instead, a new order with national grants and a "strategic support approach" for external actions should be established. This not only means a massive centralization of the awarding of funds, but also that Member States should have great freedoms in the use of funds. But where's the social focus?
"There are two decisive problems in this project", so big. Secondly, civil society organizations, regions and the European Parliament lose their rights of participation. The consequence? A strongly centralized structure that takes the opportunity to set socio -political accents to the welfare associations.
A call to defend social values
The Bagfw does not remain idle! It calls on both the federal government and the European Parliament to decide against these worrying plans. "We have to defend social cohesion in Europe", the BAGFW urgently calls for. The EU Commission is required to completely rethink its plans and not to lose sight of the social dimension and the European identity value.
With this reminder, BAGFW emphasizes how important it is to get all relevant actors on board in order to achieve a fair and socially balanced financial policy for the European Union. It is time to raise the voice and to fight for social values in Europe!
