Forest awareness in Freiburg: New findings of the Federal Forest Inventory

Great excitement in the environmental world! On October 8, the results of the fourth Federal Forest Inventory (BWI-4) were presented in the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and they come with an alarming message. Forest as a CO2 memory? Unfortunately, reality looks different! In the period from 2017 to 2022, the forest handed over more CO2 than it could record. A shock moment that lets the alarm bells ring!

What does that mean for our future? Experts show in their latest blog post with the title "Developments of the forest's CO2 memory performance of early assessment -classification of the results of the Federal Forest Inventory" how essential for forest management and modeling for our climate policy are. With the innovative forest model Fabio-Forest, more than just a simple overview is given-decisive data is provided that are essential for sustainable solutions!

The results of the BWI-4 in detail

The Federal Forest Inventory is not just a dry data delivery, it is a window to the future of our forests. The extensive results show how the condition of the forests has changed in recent years and which measures are urgently necessary to reduce CO2 emissions.

  • forests as CO2-lowering: an important topic that can no longer be ignored!
  • The BWI-4 finally gives us clarity about the development of forests in Germany. But the news is not gratifying!
  • Warn the experts of the eco-institute: Now action is required!

The experts are available for further information and a deeper insight into these critical results. Dr. Hannes Böttcher from the Energy & Climate Protection Institute area is the contact for all questions about climate protection and forest modeling. You can reach it at h.boettcher@oeko.de or on the phone number +49 30 405085-389.

Time is pushing and it is up to us to implement the knowledge from the BWI-4 into concrete deeds. Who knows how much CO2 we can save if we act courageously now. Every second counts!
