Father exemption after birth: Why Germany ignores the EU law
Father exemption after birth: Why Germany ignores the EU law
The first weeks after the birth of a child are a big challenge for families, especially for mothers. A father plays an important role in this and is indispensable. A new EU directive stipulates that fathers are entitled to ten paid free working days after birth. However, Germany failed to implement this guideline into national law until the deadline in 2022. As a result, the EU has initiated a violation procedure against Germany. The Family Ministry justifies the non -implementation with the reference to existing services such as parental leave and parental allowance. The ruling traffic light coalition parties are disagreed with the implementation of the law.
The planned family start time of two weeks for fathers should not only help to soften traditional role models, but also relieve families. However, the planned financing through a levy that employers could cost about half a billion euros per year is met with resistance among employers and the FDP. It is unclear whether the financial costs are actually the reason for hesitation or whether this is due to the retention of traditional role models.
Politics shows a remarkable hostility to family and does not adequately prioritize family matters. This can also be seen in other areas such as school and daycare centers during the corona pandemic and the lack of childcare options and educational options. Needs and concerns of families are often played against the needs of the economy.
It could be time to become active and to stand up for their rights and needs. However, there is often a lack of support from a party that represents their interests.
