University dispute over refugee village in Dahlem
The planned container village for refugees on the fallow unibles on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem ensures displeasure and protests, especially at the Free University (FU). The university management feels over, as it only learned from the newspaper from the Senate plans. The university actually plans to build a building for teaching and research on the site. The FU had helped people in the past, among other things by providing emergency accommodation in the university's sports hall.
The FU argues that from 2023 it urgently needs the area for your own construction projects and that there are no further accommodation options. Instead, the university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency nearby, which were served as refugee accommodation until 2017. Berlin's refugee coordinator Broemme emphasizes that the property can be used for the refugee accommodation as long as it remains unused and calls for a temporal statement for the construction of the planned university building.
The Senate decided at the end of March the construction of 16 other container villages for the accommodation of refugees. The ruling mayor Wegner emphasized that additional measures are necessary because there are too little living space for refugees. The planned locations for the container villages focus mainly on the eastern part of the city, which leads to further tightening of the imbalance in the distribution of refugees in the districts.
The resistance to the planned container village on the universe area in Steglitz-Zehlendorf causes criticism online. Some users express astonishment that the FU Berlin, which is committed to cosmopolitanism, shows resistance to refugee accommodation. It is noted that the university offers space for various events and promotions, but does not want to provide temporary accommodation for refugees. This leads to discussions about the credibility and tolerance of the university with regard to their values and their role in refugee support.
