Ticket prices explode: Festivals in crisis - is the future threatened?

In Germany, music festivals face major challenges. The “Lollapalooza” is currently being celebrated in Berlin, while the Techno Festival “Nation of Gondwana” will take place in Grünefeld near Nauen from July 18. The ticket prices for the latter are just under 240 euros, a significant increase compared to the 120 euros in 2019. This increase is not only due to inflation, but also reflects the increasing production costs, which rose from 1.2 million euros before the corona pandemic to 2.5 million euros, such as rbb24 reported.

Currently around 8,000 of the 10,000 tickets are already sold, but there is uncertainty about the future of the festival if the ticket sales do not meet expectations. Furthermore, the "Alinae Lumr" festival in Storkow was canceled for 2025, caused by financial problems and declining visitor numbers, which shows that other events are also under a similar pressure.

rising costs and fewer audiences

Ticket prices are not only increasing in Berlin, but also with regard to the festivals throughout Germany. According to the Tagesschau, the average price increases were around 30 percent. This is due to higher wages for technicians, security service and catering staff. These costs can only be passed on to customers in order not to damage the industry, which could lead to fewer festival visits.

Another example of increased ticket prices offers the "Wacken Open Air", the price of which was raised from 239 euros to 299 euros for four days. In the past, over 83,000 tickets have already been sold in five hours, which makes the festival one of the most sought -after. In comparison, the "Rock im Park" Festival in Nuremberg has a ticket price of up to 300 euros for three days, which also represents an increase of 70 euros compared to the previous year, while the expected number of visitors of 60,000 in advance remains among the last 75,000 in the previous year.

The future of the festivals

The challenges for festivals are not only financial in nature. A report by NDR shows that festivals such as the Elbjazz Festival in Hamburg 2025 to reorient itself. The production costs have increased significantly through inflation, increased fees and logistical challenges. This affects both large and small festivals and partly led to the cancellation of around 40 events worldwide in 2023

Overall, the future of festivals in Germany could depend on how well they adapt to the current economic conditions and develop innovative concepts to exist in the market. Rike van Kleef, music journalist, also emphasizes the social importance of these events, while the federal government with a funding fund of four million euros annually, from which 130 festivals benefit, tries to support small and medium-sized events. It remains to be seen whether this support will be sufficient in the future.
