Tempelhof-Schöneberg celebrates wine partnership with Bad Kreuznach!
The town twinning between Tempelhof-Schöneberg and Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate is celebrating its 62nd anniversary this year. This long-standing connection is primarily characterized by viticulture, which plays an important cultural and economic role in the Nahe Valley region. How berlin.de reports, the partnership is reflected not only in the friendship between the two regions, but also in practical cooperation in viticulture.
The winemakers in the partner community of Bad Kreuznach are significantly involved in the production of “Schöneberger Nahefreund”, one of the most popular district wines. As part of the collaboration, the partner community takes care of pruning and minor repairs to the vines in January before the grapes are brought to Bad Kreuznach for pressing in the fall. District councilor Eva Majewski recently initiated the visit of ten representatives from the urban development and facility management department to Bad Kreuznach in order to further strengthen the cooperation.
Special wine experiences and challenges
The connection to viticulture goes back to 1992, when the first Schöneberg grapes were delivered to the nearby area. The expansion of the “Jungfernwein” began, and since then the grapes have been brought to the Bad Kreuznach district every year. A notable incident occurred during these early years when a van full of wine was stolen just outside Berlin - the van later resurfaced but the wine was missing. Today a bottle of the first vintage remains in the Bad Kreuznach district administration as a valuable sample. The grapes were grown in the Rheingrafenberg wine cooperative in Meddersheim until 2021, but were sold at the beginning of 2022. The wine-growing school of the Bad Kreuznach state winery is now taking over the expansion, as on weinberg-schoeneberg.de is to be read.
Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the most important wine regions in Germany, characterized by steep slopes and rolling hills that offer ideal conditions for viticulture. The growing regions “the Golden Six” include Ahr, Middle Rhine, Moselle, Nahe, Palatinate and Rheinhessen, and wines from these regions have a world-famous reputation. The combination of traditional architecture and modern cellar technology highlights the quality of North Rhine-Palatinate wines. In addition, over 12 percent of the vineyards in Rhineland-Palatinate are organically farmed, which is above the German average. The aim of state policy is to support efficient, modernly equipped and sustainably operating companies, which is based on mwvlw.rlp.de can be read.
