Power outage in Berlin: relief efforts started for 45,000 affected people!

On January 5, 2026, numerous households and facilities in southwest Berlin were affected by a massive power outage, which was attributed to a left-wing extremist attack. Loud Picture Around 45,000 private households as well as important facilities such as hospitals, care facilities and veterinary clinics were affected.

In order to help the affected residents, a contact point was set up in the Mittelhof district center in Zehlendorf. Residents can warm up there and charge their cell phones and laptops, while the district office has provided emergency accommodation in the Zehlendorf town hall. SPD candidate Steffen Krach and his colleague Bettina König visited this facility to find out about the situation on site and to provide help.

Help and community

Amid the challenges posed by the power outage, numerous initiatives emerged to support residents. The “Fitness First” gym offers free warm showers for everyone affected. In addition, the landlord Sangar spontaneously organized a soup kitchen in the town hall to offer warm meals. Among the searchers was Evelyne W. (79), who asked for warm lentil soup from her very cold apartment, where it was only ten degrees.

The situation is also critical in veterinary medicine. Master electrician Bert Rümpel has connected an emergency power generator for the private Valeda veterinary clinic. This clinic normally requires 500 amps, but currently has to make do with only 40 amps, which severely limits the animals' supply. The emergency generator also consumes 20 liters of diesel per hour, which significantly increases ongoing operating costs.
