Strikes at ARD and ZDF: ver.di demands 10.5 % salary increase
In a true drama of the world of work, the strike continues to pick up speed at ARD and ZDF! From September 25, 2024, employees and freedom will take to the streets in public service broadcasters for their legitimate demands for higher salaries and fees. The United Service Union (ver.di) has clearly announced the mobilization, because time is pushing and the demands are unequivocally: a whopping 10.5 percent more wages and minimum increases of 500 euros, or 250 euros for trainees! However, the broadcasters have so far only offered a meager 2.4 percent per year of a three -year collective agreement - a clever attempt to cut employees into the public service.
"The bosses seem to pursue a clearly defined goal: the decoupling of the employees from general wage growth and the tariff increases in the public service. This strategy does not work! The employees defend themselves decisively against impending wage losses," said Christoph Schmitz-Detlefsen from ver.di. At today's meetings of the articles in Cologne, he demanded a clear turn - either fair offers or the support of collective bargaining in the SWR, otherwise there is a risk of massive strikes. "Politicians have to deal with the church tax expenses as well as it does in their own households!"
a race against the time
The demands of ver.di are clear: higher radio taxes and therefore more money for an appropriate remuneration! "Good work requires good payment," emphasizes Schmitz-Detlefsen and criticizes the planned increase in broadcasting contributions by only 58 cents from 2025. "This increase cannot be sufficient and would lead to the program!
The pressure on the transmitter is no coincidence. The media professionals expect the ARD and ZDF to accept the challenges of the modern media landscape and at the same time pay fair salaries. Anyone who wants to secure the quality of the public law offers today must also provide the broadcaster's employees the funds they need to do their work properly.
The struggle for justice
The strikes are not only a sign of despair, but also an outcry for the rights of all media professionals who long for a fair remuneration. While those responsible for the broadcasters are meeting in Cologne today, the resentment in the whole country is getting louder. Is there a change in the tariff round? Or does the negotiation base remain in the crisis? One thing is certain: the strikers cannot be dead! This will be an unforgettable struggle for the rights of the employees!
