World Literacy Day: Education offensive for Steglitz-Zehlendorf!

The preparations for World Literacy Day, which will be celebrated on September 8th, are in full swing. A special event will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Ingeborg Drewitz Library in Berlin. The event is organized by the Alpha Alliance Steglitz-Zehlendorf in cooperation with the Steglitz-Zehlendorf City Library and other partners.

The program promises diverse insights. Among other things, Slavica Klimkowsky will present stories in simple language, while a writing workshop as well as exercises and language games in simple language will be offered. The author reading with Jonas Ulrich will further enrich the event. Particularly noteworthy is a book presentation on the topic of “Writing with ADHD” and reports from learners about their personal experiences in basic education practice.

Importance of literacy

World Literacy Day, initiated by UNESCO, emphasizes the fundamental role of literacy in personal and professional development as well as social participation. This importance is also reflected in the founding of the Alpha Alliance Steglitz-Zehlendorf in 2022, which is sponsored by Mittelhof e.V. It aims to provide information on literacy and promote exchange and support between cooperation partners.

In view of the upcoming celebrations, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is offering new free information packages as part of the “My Key to the World” campaign. These packages are aimed at basic education courses and multipliers to promote literacy. The materials include, among other things, a playfully prepared household book that was tested by adults with reading and writing difficulties. They can be ordered from mid-August and can be found at literacy.de be requested.

Current developments and challenges

Studies such as those by the OECD, shed light on the challenges faced by adults in reading comprehension in Germany. The LEO studies record reading and writing skills and show that there is still a need for action. The period from 2003 to 2012 saw the UN Decade on Literacy, an initiative to combat illiteracy, which highlighted the relevance of this issue worldwide.

In conclusion, the upcoming World Literacy Day provides a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and support numerous initiatives to improve basic education. The variety of programs and materials on offer demonstrates a committed effort to promote literacy in Germany and thus lay the foundation for an inclusive society.
