In a large -scale study, researchers examined coral reefs around the world - and their results are alarming. Plastic waste can be found even in the most remote areas in the world, including in coral reefs. An international team of researchers has now examined 84 such reefs and their ecosystems. The study led the researchers into the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, some of them in depths of up to 150 meters.

The images created clearly show how strong coral reefs are dirty with plastic waste. In addition, the researchers found that the amount of garbage, contrary to previous assumptions, increases with the depth of the reef. About three quarters of the garbage are residues of fishing, such as broken nets and lines.

These findings are worrying, since lower reefs are rarely taken into account in protective measures and are still little researched. The researchers therefore call for the establishment of marine protection areas for these reefs. Interestingly, the study also shows that coral reefs that are near marine protection areas are particularly dirty with plastic waste. The researchers explain this by the fact that these areas are increased more often due to the increased fishing activities. Realls, on the other hand, are the least affected reefs that are far from human settlements, large cities and ports.

Despite the worrying trend, according to the co-author of the study, Bart Shepherd, there is still hope. There are areas in which only a little garbage was found, which indicates effective measures against plastic pollution. In order to reduce pollution, it must be ensured that fishermen leave less garbage in the water. In addition to the expansion of protected areas, biodegradable equipment and free repair and disposal offers for defective equipment could also contribute to this, according to the scientists.

This study once again illustrates the alarming effects of plastic pollution on our oceans and its sensitive ecosystems. It is urgently necessary to take measures to contain plastic waste and protect the coral reefs. This is the only way to ensure the long -term preservation of these important habitats and their biodiversity.
