Ryanair shortens flights: Berlin and Hamburg affected by capacity loss!
The Ryanair management raises the alarm: Eddie Wilson, the CEO of the Irish low-cost airline, announced on Thursday that Ryanair will drastically reduce its range of flight in Germany. Berlin Brandenburg (BER), Hamburg and other German airports Airport are particularly affected. From the end of March 2025, six out of 54 routes will be deleted in Berlin Airport, including connections to popular destinations such as Brussels, Krakow and Chania. This leads to a decline in seating capacity by 20 percent, while 60 percent of the connections are reduced in Hamburg. Dortmund, Leipzig and Dresden also have to make do without Ryanair control in the summer of 2025. Despite these challenges, on BER, the lower airport fees will continue to be recorded, as these compensate for the increase in air security fees, as those responsible according to the ZDF . While some airports score with falling fees and cooperative behavior, the BER stays behind and is now punished with flight lines.
Nevertheless, there is also positive news: Ryanair announced the return to Lübeck, where new connections will be offered from the end of March 2025. This decision shows that lower airport fees and cooperation with regional airports Ryanair can persuade the offer to expand. Alpine airports even benefit from additional connections, which is rated as a ray of hope in the dark overall position of flight operations in Germany. In conclusion, however, it remains to be seen whether and how the federal government will react to Ryanair's demands, in particular with regard to the necessary reduction in air traffic tax and other fees.
