Reinickendorf becomes Fairtrade city: A sign of sustainable development
On 21. September 2024 , the Reinickendorf district not only celebrates the day of the open town hall, but also an important milestone on the way to more social justice and a sustainable economy. On this day, Reinickendorf is officially awarded Fairtrade City.
The Fairtrade certificate, which is awarded to the district, is a signal for the promotion of fair trade practices at the local level. "With this award, we support the Future Charter of the 2030 Agenda and actively campaign for fair trade," explains district mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner (CDU). She will officially open the event at 2 p.m. and explain the most important milestones of the project.
This initiative not only symbolizes a better shopping experience, but also has deeper social implications. Fair trade aims to pay producers in developing countries fair prices for their goods in order to improve their life situation. Reinickendorf's commitment is part of a larger trend that is becoming increasingly important worldwide.
In parallel to the certification ceremony, the district invites you to the forecourt on Eichborndamm on Saturday and the premises of the town hall. Numerous stalls provide information about services and career opportunities within the district administration. Family attractions are also offered: from information stands of the youth welfare office to the participation of the Bundeswehr, which will be on site with an information tent.
Visitors not only expect interesting insights into the municipal administration, but also a colorful cultural program. Artists from the Reinickendorf music school appear and interviews with official managers are on the program. A special highlight is the "Build the Change!" Campaign, in which the library promotes the creativity of the children. Among other things, a burger truck takes care of the physical well-being, which ensures all the culinary delights.
