Amphibia protection in Berlin-Heiligensee: Volunteers wanted for migration support

This year's Amphibia hike on Sandhauser Strasse in Berlin-Heiligensee will also be accompanied this year by a seasonal protection fence of the Environment and Nature Conservation Office Reinickendorf. Volunteers save several hundred amphibians every year from road to death by monitoring the protection fence and bringing the animals safely across the street.

For the hike that begins in early March and lasts until mid -May, volunteers are still sought who can control the fence for an hour or two in the morning. Julia Schrod-Thiel, the responsible district councilor for order, environment and traffic, emphasizes that no previous knowledge is required and that the support of the volunteers is also required to return the animals back to the beginning of August.

interested parties who want to make an active contribution to animal welfare can report by email at naturschutz@reinickendorf.berlin.de. Individual votes with the volunteers are possible at any time.

The protection of amphibians during their hike is of great importance, since they have to overcome many dangers every year during this time. Through the voluntary commitment of the helpers, many are saved and the nature conservation in the region is supported.

The following table lists some information about the amphibians that could be affected on the hike on Sandhauser Strasse:

| Type of amphibians | Frequency | Hazard status |
| —————— | ——— | —————– |
| Earth toad | Often | Not endangered |
| Grasfrosch | Often | Not endangered |
| Ponds | Rare | Endangered |
| … | … | … |

It is important that the population is informed about the importance of amphibian protection and that even more volunteers are committed to ensure the protection of animals. Everyone can make a contribution to safely accompany the amphibians during their hike and to help them achieve their habitats.
