Reinickendorf celebrates children's rights: Open town hall day on September 20th!

On September 20, 2025, the open town hall day will take place in Reinickendorf, a symbol of the importance of children's rights in society. The event, which will take place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Eichborndamm in Wittenau, is in close collaboration with UNICEF and the German Children's Fund (DKHW). District mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner emphasizes the central role of children's rights for democracy and the future of our society, as berlin.de reports.

During the day, visitors can expect a varied program that not only entertains but also informs. At 4 p.m. there will be a reading hour for children up to 10 years old in the mayor's office. The event also includes a children's rally with a variety of activities, including face painting, a toy mobile and a cargo bike course. Other attractions include information stands from the various offices and district institutions as well as the mobile citizens' office, which offers unbureaucratic services without an appointment.

Children's rights and democracy

World Children's Day, also on September 20th, has the motto "Children's Rights - Building Blocks for Democracy!" for the rights of children. This event, initiated by UNICEF Germany and the DKH, aims to put the spotlight on the importance of children's rights for the future and democracy. A main goal is to encourage children and young people to know and live their rights in order to develop a better understanding of democratic processes. The event also calls for greater consideration of the rights of young people in political decisions, especially in this election year of 2025, as stated on unicef.de.

The origins of World Children's Day date back to 1954, when the 9th General Assembly of the United Nations recommended a global Children's Day. The aim of the day is to stand up for children's rights and to promote friendship among children and young people. Germany chose September 20th as the date to celebrate this important day, and today it is now established in many cities as the largest non-commercial children's and family festival, as the German Children's Fund highlights on its website dkhw.de.
