Pankow Women's Prize 2024: Malalai Murr honored as a bridge builder
On March 11, 2024, Malalai Murr was awarded this year's Pankow Women's Prize. The ceremonial ceremony took place in the Emma-Ihrer hall of the Pankow town hall. Malalai Murr, a native of Afghan, was awarded for her tireless and selfless commitment for refugee women, children and families in Pankow as well as for their special commitment to Afghan women in Berlin and Afghanistan. She has been working with refugees for many years and is a bridge builder between different groups.
Malalai Murr is known for working with their association Arezo e.V. primarily on a voluntary basis for refugee women, children and adolescents in Pankow. It offers advice in various areas, organizes leisure activities such as dance events and music lessons and is also involved in political education. Dr. Oliver Jütting, the head of the district council of Pankow, praised Malalai Murr's clear attitude and her endeavor to let women and men talk together.
The Pankow Women's Prize was launched in 2019 and has since been awarded annually to individuals, women's projects, initiatives or companies that work in the district for the rights of women and girls and promote gender democracy. Previous award winners were Renate Laurentius (2020), Raja Al Khlefawi (2021) and Christina "Tina" Pfaff (2023). In 2022 the price could not be awarded due to a budget lock.
The Pankow women's prize recognizes the special equality policy commitment that aims to comply and promote women and girls, support marginalized women's groups or develop innovative-sustainable equality projects. Further information on the Pankower Women's Prize is available on the official website of the Pankow district assembly.
