redesign of the playground in Weißensee: A step towards inclusion

The playground at Gounodstraße 37-39 in Weißensee, Berlin, experienced significant transformation from July 2024 to the recent reopening. This renovation is not only a renewal of the square, but also a wonderful example of progress in the direction of inclusive play opportunities for children from all areas of life.

The new concept of the playground, which is under the motto "fire brigade", was enriched by two significant play elements: a wobbly fire-fighting car and a creative playhouse that donates the smallest shadow. These elements not only promote the physical activity of children, they also offer opportunities for social interaction, such as a common sand elevator, which enables children to play as a team.

The playground is equipped with modern offers, including a slackline and a balancing course that offer particularly active children new challenges. A highlight is the wobble animal "Löschi", which is designed in the design of a fire extinguisher. These playful offers contribute to the development of motor skills and coordination.

The extensive renovation was realized with financial support from the daycare and playground renovation program (KSSP) of around 130,000 euros. The new sand boxes are now also provided with grave protection to ensure the safety of the small players. An additional aspect of the redesign includes the complete renewal of the fall protection material in order to cushion falls and increase safety.

Manuela Anders-Granitzki, the city councilor for order and public space, was enthusiastic about the redesign: "We are striving to modernize more playgrounds for children in Pankow. I am particularly pleased that we can create an environment in which children can play with and without disabilities."

The newly designed playground in Weißensee not only stands for the city's commitment, but also reflects an important social trend in which inclusion is promoted in childhood. Such changes are essential to create a game environment in which children of all skills can have fun. It is hoped that many other playgrounds will experience similar conversions in the future to ensure an inclusive and friendly environment for everyone.
