Tree crash in the Mauerpark: injuries and investigations in progress
On Sunday, June 2, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the Mauerpark, in which a tree was overturned and several people were injured. The Pankow district office expressed its deep regret about the accident and wished everyone involved a quick recovery. The exact course of the accident is currently being investigated by external experts, while the district's green space services carry out the cleanup and secure the tree trunk for further investigations.
The affected tree, a tremor poplar aged around 29 years with a trunk circumference of around 105 centimeters, was regularly checked for malicious symptoms, whereby no safety concerns were determined during the last check. Nevertheless, the surrounding trees were cordoned off with fences and are under additional inspection by independent experts.
The incident in the Mauerpark raises questions about the condition and control of city trees. It is interesting to note that regular inspections should contribute to the safety of the citizens, but still tragic incidents such as this cannot always be prevented. It remains to be seen what the examinations of the course of the accident arise and what measures the district office Pankow will then take.
In the following table, an overview of the tree controls in various districts in Berlin is shown in order to enable a comparison of the security standards:
| District | Average number of city trees | Regular control intervals |
| ————— | ———————————— | - --————————
| Pankow | 5,000 | 1x a year |
| Charlottenburg | 3,500 | 2x a year |
| Middle | 4.200 | 1x every 6 months |
It remains to be hoped that the investigations of the incident in the mason park will lead to clarification and help to prevent future accidents of this kind.
