Pandemie Agreement: The fight against H5N1 and the teachings from the Corona crisis
"Berliner Morgenpost": A comprehensive preparation for future pandemics is indispensable - Comment from Kai Wiedermann
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been negotiating a pandemic agreement for two years that is intended to ensure that future crisis situations will be mastered better than Corona pandemic. In view of the fact that the last pandemic has requested around 20 million lives worldwide, this is of great importance.
Actually, the agreement should be completed in May, but there were disputes about responsibilities and financing. To date, the agreement has not been signed. Now solutions are searched in the background, because it means from WHO circles that not everything has not yet been lost.
At this time, however, disturbing news from the USA is bursting. In a short time, the bird flu virus has developed new hosts, including sea lions, ferrets and cats. The fact that it can now also infect dairy cows and can be transferred from there to humans is another alarm signal. Influenza viruses such as H5N1 not only have devastating effects on the bird world, but also actually pose the potential for a pandemic.
The WHO currently classifies the acute risk as low, but urges to neglect the fight against H5N1. Infectiologists and virologists in Germany also warn a consistent preparation for an emergency.
For the Pandemie Agreement, this means only one thing: the little ones in the negotiations must have an end. We cannot allow ourselves to fail, especially if we really want to learn from the experiences of the Corona crisis. Anyone who is still blocking now did not recognize the danger.
