Ecological renovation: Angel Pool starts against algae plague!

In today's press release, the district councilor for order, environment, nature, streets and green spaces, Christopher Schriner, announced that the ecological renovation of the Engel Becken will begin this week. This measure follows extensive investigations that found extreme phosphate pollution in the water. The Angel Basin, a second-order body of water, shows a severely disturbed ecological balance, which is reflected in massive algae growth and a greatly reduced visibility depth. A restful state of the water is therefore urgently needed in order to revitalize the ecosystem, as berlin.de reports.

The first phase of the renovation work began on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. A precipitant that is harmless to health and ecology is used to bind phosphate and thus drastically reduce the nutrient load in the water. The Mitte district is obliged to improve the ecological condition of the Engel Becken and is planning several measures to this end, which will be accompanied by monitoring. A second date for nutrient precipitation is scheduled for autumn 2025 in order to further evaluate the progress of the measures.

Background information on the environmental situation

The causes of the high phosphate pollution have already been addressed in the corresponding studies from 2023. The results of these analyzes are available on the district office's website. The ecological restoration measures are an important step towards restoring balance in the Angel Pool. Improving the water quality status should not only increase the visibility depth, but also stabilize the habitat for flora and fauna.

Given the urgency of this measure, responsible and sustainable solutions are required not only to achieve the ecological standard, but also to secure it in the long term. In this context, the district office's expertise in monitoring and implementing the renovation work is valued. For further information, please contact the press office of the Mitte district office at the email address presse@ba-mitte.berlin.de available.

The citizens can look forward to the progress of the renovation work and hope that the conditions in the Engel Becken will soon improve.
