Safe cycling on Sonnenallee: new cycle paths for Neukölln and Schöneweide by 2024!
new cycling infrastructure for safe traffic in Neukölln
From mid -August 2024, the southern Sonnenallee in Neukölln will be redesigned to improve safety for cyclists. The new cycling infrastructure will enable cyclists to drive safely and comfortably from the Köllnische Heide S-Bahnhof to the district border.
The cycling lanes are created on each route along the Sonnenallee on a distance of 1135 meters. These separate cycle paths are built on the existing parking strips and delimited from the main street with "flexpollers". Additional security measures such as "Leitboys", thresholds and color markings are installed at intersections to ensure the safety of cyclists.
The district councilor for urban development, environment and traffic, Jochen Biedermann, emphasizes the importance of expanding the cycling infrastructure: "It is important to connect cycle paths to create real alternatives to car traffic. By expanding the cycle paths in Sonnenallee, we improve the connections outside of the city ring and close a gap in the bike path network of the district."
The financing for the expansion of the wheel lanes comes from the special program "Stadt und Land" of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport as well as funds from the State of Berlin. The renovation work is expected to be completed by September 2024.
The expansion of the cycling infrastructure in Sonnenallee is an important step to promote safe cycling in Neukölln. This project shows the commitment of the city of Berlin for sustainable and safe traffic design, which promotes alternative forms of mobility.
