Nature experience room in the Rudow birdwald: a paradise for everyone!
Neukölln, Deutschland - The Rudow Vogelwäldchen in Neukölln, a landscape protection area worth protecting, is currently being redesigned to create a new nature experience space. The project extends over an area of 3.75 hectares and was originally created in 1872 as a hunting area between Buckow and Rudow. There are more than 130 animal species, including 15 breeding bird species such as the paste, Zilpzalp and robin, as well as various insects and mammals such as hedgehogs and the dwarf bat. The district office Neukölln and the S.T.E.R.N GmbH initiated this project in order to make the district of greener and more lively. The results were published under the title "Ideas for a nature experience room in the Rudow Vogelwäldchen", with the early inclusion of children playing a central role in the design process. These were able to collect and discuss their ideas in workshops. The project period runs over several years.
The vision of the new nature adventure space provides for four tours that are supposed to make different habitats of the forest tangible. These tours are designed with feelings, turntables for the assignment of animal voices and small sculptures in order to intensify the nature experience. It is particularly important that the bird grinding is largely protected by fences to secure the nesting site of the floor breeders. Vision and planning aim to make nature accessible to all age groups and to promote exploration of nature, especially for daycare and school children.
project modules and planning
The project "Natural experience room Rudower Vogelwäldchen" is divided into several modules. Module 1, the conception phase, has already been completed. The planning and construction of Module 2 are expected to begin from 2027, followed by Module 3, in which the environmental education offers are created. One goal of this project is not only to promote biodiversity, but also to improve the quality of life in urban areas. This concept is in accordance with the findings of the Research Report of the Federal Office for Nature Conservation, which emphasizes the importance of nature experience in cities and examines their role in improving the micro climate and ecological quality.
On March 29, 2025, the results of the conception phase were presented in the Alba Youth Club. Topos is currently conducting investigations into the flora and fauna of the forest, while planning by the Szamatolski Schrickel planning company is being managed. The early participation of children on October 9, 2024 has already produced the first ideas that should flow into the further planning process.
The upcoming redesign of the birdwood is supported by means of the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Living and is an essential part of the model project "Social cohesion Gropiusstadt". The newly designed playground in the north of the area is to be seamlessly integrated into the natural experience space in order to make the terrain attractive for families and to promote direct access to nature.
